Stand Up for a Plastic free sea!

Stand Up for a Plastic free sea!

One company initiative we can all get behind

Golden sands and stunning coastline is what our Algarve is most famous for, and keeping it this way should be a priority on everyones list.

With plastic pollution being highlighted in the media over recent years, it’s more important now than ever before that we think about the positive changes we can make.

We can all play our part in this. You may already be reducing the amount of plastic you use at home, and making a conscious effort to recycle. Maybe you’re making different choices about the products you buy and what they’re made of. Every little really does help, and whether you’re living in the Algarve, or here for a holiday, there’s something extra you can do in this beautiful part of the world to keep our sea plastic free (and have some great fun at the same time!).

If we all make small changes, imagine just how big the impact can be. We all want to enjoy our oceans, so let’s help keep them clean too!

Clean beach campaign

Founder of Zen SUP, John Hogan, has always been passionate about the environment. Having undertaken several big ocean clean ups along the Algarve coast, ‘thinking clean’ has also become a part of daily operations for this Stand Up Paddle school – even Luna the dog gets involved!

Since starting their ‘ZEN SUP Clean Beach Campaign’, several hundred kilos of plastic have been collected along the way.  “Our Clean Beach Plastic Collection at Faro Island and other locations throughout the Algarve has become a regular and very popular feature of our winter calendar here at ZEN SUP.’” A lot of logistical planning goes into creating such community events, especially when each one leaves between 200 and 300 kilos of plastic to be disposed of at the end. Just imagine the difference if all this was still floating in the ocean whilst you’re enjoying all the Algarve coast has to offer, let alone the detrimental effect it’s having on our environment and wildlife.

Get involved

There are several ways you can get involved. Constant ‘think clean’ mentality is a part of every trip, and what better way to make a contribution to helping save our planet. With a variety of tours on offer from sunrise, to sunset, there is something for everyone. “Our clients come in all shapes and sizes, ages, backgrounds and capabilities. Our youngest client being 4 years of age, our eldest being 78!“

A full range of tours can be found on the ZEN SUP website. If you’re here in the off-peak season, you can also keep an eye out for their Clean Beach Campaigns – details can be found on their Facebook page.
