Rota do Petisco – Everything you need to know in 3 simple steps

Those on board with Bolhas boat tours this weekend were lucky enough to encounter the worlds second largest species of shark, the basking shark, just off the coast from Praia da Ribeira do Cavalo.

Rota do Petisco

Everything you need to know in 3 simple steps!

What better way to discover the Algarve than trying tapas and a selection of fine wines in a choice of over 300 restaurants across the Algarve? That’s exactly what Rota do Petisco is all about.

We even went to the hardship of sampling some for you, and have some great recommendations on where you can get started!

Step 1: Pick up your passport

Don’t panic, you don’t need your real passport for this – instead pick up a ‘Rota do Petisco passaporte’ from any participating bar or restaurant. You can find a list of all those taking part by clicking here.

This little booklet costs just €1.50, and serves as a great guide. Written in both Portuguese and English, it’s easy to discover which participating restaurant you would like to visit, as each place details exactly what they are serving, together with a photo to entice those tastebuds!

Step 2: Choose where to go

With so much choice, this was the tricky part for us! Making your choice can be done by browsing through your newly purchased passport, or you can search online here.

Searching online offers the benefit of showing you exactly where each bar or restaurant is located, which can be particularly helpful if you are unfamiliar with the area, or want to know which participating venue is closest to your current location.

Step 3: Enjoy!

Whether you opt for a savoury tapas and some fine wine, or perhaps a sumptuous sweet, at €3 each (just €2 for sweets), you can always wander on to the next destination in your passport.

After all, from Odeceixe to Cabanas de Tavira, there will always be a ‘petisco’ waiting for you!

If you’re not sure where to start, we chose to start our tapas route in Lagos, and tried great tapas at several venues. Our firm favourite was the spicy chicken wings at Amuras – we will definitely be back for more!

The sardines at Vilabranca also went down a treat, even with a member of our team who isn’t a big fish fan. We also discovered that once you start, it’s hard to stop… and once you start your journey along this delicious route, we’re sure the same will happen to you!
