Find out what to expect this Autumn in the Algarve
The Algarve, situated on the southernmost region of continental Portugal, has more sunshine per year than California. Yes, you read that right!
Is the Algarve hot in October is a commonly asked question, with variable answers, but with average weather temperatures in the mid 20’s, it’s still plenty warm enough to head down to the beach. With the wind generally calming down come October, the sea temperature also manages to climb to an inviting average of 21ºC. It’s a great time to visit the Algarve if you prefer less crowds, warm weather, and great accommodation deals!
What to expect
The Algarve’s one of Europe’s sunniest places, and has Portugal’s warmest weather. The mountains that divide the north and south of the country protect the Algarve from northern and Atlantic winds, so it also gets less rain. The winds that do arrive from the Atlantic are stronger offshore, making the Algarve great for sailing and watersports.
Averages
There’s an average high temperature of 23ºC in the Algarve’s capital, Faro, in October. This is perfectly warm enough for you to relax on the beach, although you should bring some warmer things for the evenings as it can get a bit chilly. The average sea temperature’s 21ºC, while humidity’s low and ranges from 50% to over 90%. There’s more rain as the month goes on, with an average of 54mm across eight rainy days, which usually comes in short showers.
Daylight
During October you can expect 11 hours of daylight with seven hours of sunshine in Faro. UV levels will be moderate so you’ll still need plenty of sun cream. Sunset’s at 7.15pm at the start of the month; this is closer to 5.30pm by the end of October because daylight saving finishes.
